For the first couple of songs during the show at Emo’s Annex on Saturday night, you couldn’t help but wonder, where is Sharon Jones? It appeared for a while that the Dap-Kings were on their own, when alas guitarist and singer Binky Griptite explained that they were still warming up from Ms. Jones.
Perhaps that’s a good thing, because when the saucy Ms. Jones made her way to the stage, she was already boiling over with energy. The lady not only sings, she testifies. She doesn’t just engage the crowd, she controls it -- especially the men. Several times throughout the night, she brought eager male fans onstage, teasing them with her pulsing lyrics and dance moves. And each time, she had to politely (and sometimes not so politely) show them the way off.
The best moment of the night though was when she got a “little political” with her socially conscious “This Land is Your Land.”
